Mary Saenz Medrano-Moreno, 72, longtime resident of Grant County N. M. mining area passed away Wednesday December 27, 2017 in Sierra Vista, Arizona where she had made her home.

Mary was born July 21, 1945 to Mercedes Marquez and Ralph B. Saenz in Silver City, N. M. She attended Cobre Schools and graduated from Western New Mexico University where she went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Education. Her expertise and love were teaching the younger students in her long teaching career. After the death of her first husband in 2011, Benito Medrano, she married Antonio G. Moreno Jr. in 2014 and made their home in Sierra Vista, Arizona where she was active at Saint Andrew’s Catholic Church, the Cursillo movement, jail and hospital ministries.

She is survived by husband, Antonio Moreno of Sierra Vista, AZ; son, Ricardo S. Medrano and wife Brenda of Deming; 2 brothers, Ralph Saenz and wife Josie (3 sons, Ralph III, Jesus and Carlos, 2 daughters, Teresa and Michelle, spouses and their children); and Lorenzo P. Saenz and wife, Lynette, (l son) of Bayard; sister, Irene S. Garcia and husband Eligio of Sandy, Utah (3 sons, Elias, Daniel and Alex, and their spouses and children); 2 grandchildren, Aurora Medrano and Ricardo Medrano Jr. and step-mother, Valentina Saenz.

She considered as her family her husband, Antonio’s children, Gilbert Moreno, Yvonne and husband Kevin Harrison, Cynthia and husband Robert Niewenhuis, Annie and husband Johnny Cook; 4 grandchildren, Sean, Anthony, Matthew and Andrew. Mary was known as “Auntie Maya” to all (after Valentina Saenz and great-aunt Tia Tencha Grijalva).
