Mary Lou Mankle, 82 of Curlew, died May 12,2017 at the Emmetsburg Care Center. Mary Lou Shipler, the daughter of Earl and Eva Stewart Shipler was born May 27, 1934 in Burt, IA where she was raised and received her education, graduating from the Burt High School. She then attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and completed her finalization certificate at Mankato University. She was united in marriage with Donald Mankle in 1955 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Ia. After their marriage the couple lived in various locations including Pocahontas, Laurens, and Mallard before moving to Curlew in 1965. During those years Mary Lou taught school in the Havelock-Plover and Pocahontas School systems.

Survivors include her husband Don of Curlew, IA, children: Greg (Pat) of Seattle WA, Brian of Bellingham, WA, Bruce (Dee) of Clive, IA, and Kelly (Kathy) of Bellingham, WA, grandchildren, Brandon, Brett, Hanna, Thomas, Taylor and Morgan, brothers Boyd Shipler of Burt, IA and Max Shipler of Phrump, Nevada, and a sister Marsha Coco of Des Moines, IA. Mary Lou was a member of the United Methodist Church, Mallard where she was active in the church choir. She was preceded in death by her daughter in law Dawn and brother Roger “Bud”.
