Mary Jane Bethel Gifford, age 96, of Rensselaer passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at the Jasper County Hospital Alterna care. Bethel was born in Barkley Township, Jasper County, Indiana on March 10, 1915. She was the daughter of the late Isaac “Jack” Wells and Agnes B. (Potts) Wells.
Bethel attended school in Rensselaer and Hammond. Her marriage was in Hammond, Indiana in 1938, to Elton Melvin Gifford who preceded her in death in 1981. She lived in Gary, Indiana, Deep River, Indiana, Winter Haven, Florida and Wausau, Wisconsin.
Bethel was a member of the Virgie Christian Church, the Rensselaer Literary Club and the Garden Club. She was a homemaker and had been employed as a dental assistant. Surviving is one son, Paul E. Gifford of Valparaiso, 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Roger Wells Gifford, two sisters, Ruby E. Gifford and Dorothy P. Wells, and a brother, Ted C. Wells.
