Mary Ellen Shaner, 69, of Danville, IL died at 12:30 AM, Friday, November 3, 2006 at Heartland Manor Care Nursing Home in Paxton, IL.

Mrs. Shaner was born October 21, 1937 in Beardstown, IL; The daughter of William and Alice Fox Lang. She married John R. Shaner on July 2, 1961 in Virginia, IL and he survives.

She is also survived by two sons, William J. Shaner (wife, Kristen) of Morton, IL and Mark R. Shaner (wife, Jennifer) of Carl Junction, MO and a grandson, Matthew Shaner of Carl Junction, MO.

Mrs. Shaner graduated from Virginia (Illinois) High School, Monmouth College and Washington University. She taught in the public school systems of Freeport and Danville, where she became a learning disabilities teacher following certification from Illinois State University.

Children and her family (which included her dogs, Felix, Schatzie and Wags) were the love of her life. Her sons, grandson, students and friends provided her with great joy and fulfillment and she was very proud of her Danville Teacher of the Year award.

Mrs. Shaner was an active Presbyterian and community volunteer with memberships in the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Altrusa and Delta Kappa Gamma (an honorary teaching sorority). She also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.

She was an avid University of Illinois basketball fan and music lover – playing and teaching flute. Traveling was also an important part of her life, and a trip to the Holy Land was one of her most special memories. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
