Mary Ellen McKercher passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, March 28, 2021. She was born on March 28, 1941, in Vernon, MI a daughter of Theodore and Violet (Collins) Cusack.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents. On July 6, 1963, Mary Ellen married Patrick McKercher, who survives. Also surviving are her children, Thomas (Michelle) McKercher, Timothy (Carol) McKercher, and Mary Pat (John) Flanigan; granddaughters, Grace, Kendall, Hannah, and Izzie McKercher; and sisters, Kathleen Cummiskey and Margaret Taylor.
Mary Ellen was a graduate of Swartz Creek High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Michigan State University. She was a member of Beta Mu Chapter of Delta Delta Delta Sorority at Michigan State University.
Mary Ellen was an Elementary teacher in Flushing, MI, and the owner and proprietor of The Apple Crate gift store in Kalamazoo, MI.
While living in Plymouth, MI, she was the Founding Chair of the Blue-Ribbon Commission on Aging. She later served on the City of Plymouth Planning Commission and was later elected to the Plymouth City Commission, where she served as Mayor Pro Tempore prior to moving to Portage, MI where she served on the planning commission. After moving to Kalamazoo MI, she was a member of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra League.
Mary Ellen liked to travel with her husband, her favorite destination was Ireland. Mary Ellen and Patrick also enjoyed living in Baltimore, MD, Washington, DC, and Beaufort, SC. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren at their cottage in Glenn Shore, MI and eating at her favorite restaurants in Saugatuck, MI. In her spare time, she loved to garden. Her favorite flower was a red Geranium.
Mary Ellen will always be remembered as an amazing mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt, and friend. She will be missed as the matriarch of the McKercher family.
