Obituary of Mary Elizabeth “Granny” Yates

Granny, along with her husband, Howard, owned Yates Conoco and Yates and Tubbs Phillips 66 Wrecker and Ambulance Service for over 30 years and continued to serve as bookkeeper for many more years. She was an active member of Cherry Ridge Baptist Church for many years, until illness made it difficult to attend. She passes on a love for missions to her children. She loved gardening and working in her yard.

Granny was also known for her love of ceramics. She shared many good times with her children and grand-children making ceramics and, for a number of years, shared her love with residents of area nursing homes. As a wonderful cook, Granny always made food for those in need for and her children and grandchildren, who have great memories of Christmases filled with the delicious smells of Granny’s cooking.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Yates.

Granny is survived by three daughters, Katherine Yates Tubbs of Bastrop, Dorothy Yates Driggers of Bastrop and Peggy Yates Bonner of Starkville, Mississippi; her son, Hilton Yates of Plano, Texas; five grandchildren, Mike Tubbs and wife Cassundra, Chris Bonner, Steve Tubbs and wife Dee, Cindy Driggers and Tyler Yates; six great grandchildren, Sarah Tubbs, Zach Tubbs, Murphy Tubbs, Will Bonner, Bryant Bonner and Derrick Harper; a host of extended friends and family and her faithful companion and pet of five years, Charlie.

“Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also and he praiseth her.” Proverbs 31:28
