Betty Elliott, 90, of Elkhart, passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Greenleaf Health Campus. Dec. 25, 1922 – Oct. 14, 2013

Having been a devoted Roman Catholic her entire life, and because of her faith in Jesus Christ, she is now resting in heaven. Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Navarre was born on Dec. 25, 1922, in Ecorse, Mich., to Leo and Harriett (Raupp) Navarre. She married 1st Lt. William James Schoenherr in June of 1943 in Ecorse. He died in July of 1977. Betty then married Carter E. Elliott on July 11, 1981, in Elkhart.

He survives along with two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Gerald L. (Rita) Navarre M.D. of Corona, Calif., A. Edward (Claudette) Navarre of Severna Park, Md., and Ethel Navarre of Riverview, Mich. Betty is survived by two sons and five daughters, Robert F. (Linda) Schoenherr of San Jose, Calif., Candy (Edward) Wilson of Roxbury, Mass., Jeffrey T. (Cherie) Schoenherr of Simi Valley, Calif., Susan Storm of Cambridge, Mass., Amy (Tony) Himmelspach and Mary (Nick) Venechuk, both of Rockford, Mich., and Ann (John) Bates M.D. of Westfield. Betty was blessed with 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her sisters, Nancy Galante and Marjorie Stewart, her brothers, William and James Navarre and her stepson, Lee Elliott.

Betty graduated from St. Francis Xavier High School in Ecorse in 1939, where she was class valedictorian. She graduated magna cum laude from Nazareth College, Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1943 with a B.S. degree in mathematics and Kappa Gamma Pi Honors.

She taught junior high math at Holy Angels Catholic School in Sturgis, Mich., from 1961-1964 and at Centreville (Mich.) Junior High School from 1964-1977. Betty was a former president of the Four Arts Club of Elkhart and the Old Orchard Blossoms Golf League. She was also a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and the Ladies’ Rosary Society. She was a hospice volunteer with Elkhart General Hospital Hospice from 1991-2004. She was also a former member of the “Funtimers” Luncheon Club, Red Hat Society and Curves Fitness Club. Betty often said her greatest accomplishment was raising a family who all loved each other. She will be remembered for her warm smile and sweet and loving heart.
