Mary Ann Byers, 88, of Jacksonville, IL died November 11, 2014 at Lavender Ridge Care Center in Jacksonville.
She was born August 17, 1926 in Hondo, TX, the daughter of Henry and Minnie Oefinger Schweers. She married Eugene C. Byers on June 23, 1945 in San Antonio, TX and he preceded her in death on September 23, 1991.
She is survived by two sons, Eugene H. Byers (wife, Marilyn) of Bloomington and Gary W. Byers (companion, DeLinda Garde) of Jacksonville; a daughter, Sharon Metz (husband, Mark) of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Angela Chace (husband, Dan) of Columbia, Nicole Carolan (husband, Quincy) of Bloomington, David Byers, Justin Metz (wife, Heather) of Edwardsville, Garrett Metz of Edwardsville, and Adam Metz of Rock Island; five great grandchildren, Emily and Amanda Chace, Olivia and Brooklyn Carolan, and Hunter Metz; two sisters, Faydell Wiemers of Hondo, TX and Luren Gavlick (husband, Emil) of San Antonio, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son in infancy.
Mary Ann served as the financial secretary and bookkeeper for Centenary United Methodist Church in Jacksonville for over 50 years. In addition, she assisted her husband with bookkeeping at the Byers Brothers International truck dealership in Jacksonville. She was a devoted member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the church’s Ruth Circle for many years. A talented seamstress, Mary Ann loved to sew and offer her handiwork at many craft fairs in the area. She was an avid soccer fan of any and all matches that featured her grandchildren.
