Marvin Wallace “Cy” Jones

September 16, 1926 – October 24, 2020

 

M. W. Jones was born to Hilda and Clarence Marvin Jones in Segoville, Texas on September 16, 1926. Later, George Menoher became his stepdad.

            Sports were such a big part of the Jones family history. M. W. attend Denver City High School and was a member of the football team. He received the nickname of “Cy” by his coaches and teammates for being a cyclone on the football field. Cy graduated from Denver City High School in 1943.

            Cy joined the Marines during World War II. After his tour of duty, he returned to Denver City where he married Charlotte Ward on April 18, 1947. The following year Cy and Charlotte added to their family with the birth of their firstborn, Steven. The family continued to grow with the birth of George Michael (Mike), David and Paul.

            Before the boys started playing ball, Cy himself played baseball and softball. He coached the boys in Little League and Babe Ruth. He played on the Shell Oil Company team out of Denver City, Texas. Those days were the beginning of the 41 years working for Shell Oil. He completed those years as foreman for the Eunice area. After retiring from Shell, Cy became a foreman for Greenhill for a short time.

            In 1963, a freak accident took Charlotte’s life leaving Cy to raise the 4 boys. He is not only preceded in death by his wife Charlotte, but by two sons Mike and Paul. Also preceding him are his parents, sisters Norma Jean Jones Russell and Linda Menoher Cunningham.

            He is survived by sons Steve and wife, Elsie and David and partner Paula along with daughters-in-law Loretta and Gina. Cy was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren. Survived also by a brother, Rosser Menoher, several brothers & sisters-in-law.
