Marshall Camiel Van Helsland Sr., 91, of Bridgman, Michigan, died Saturday afternoon, February 12, 2005, at his son’s home in Green Valley, Arizona. Marshall was born October 6, 1913, in Klinge, Holland to Adolf and Maria Eulodia (Flos) Van Helsland. His family came to the United States when he was 13 years old, making their home first in Mishawaka, Indiana, and then moving to Chicago. On June 20, 1942, in Chicago, he married Loretta Maggs, who preceded him in death on October 25, 1994. Marshall was an apartment manager in Chicago, retiring in 1975 and moving permanently to Sawyer, Michigan. In his younger years, he raced pigeons with his father, loved bicycling, and was an accomplished bowler. He spent many afternoons and evenings at Comisky Park. He loved to follow Major League baseball, especially the Chicago White Sox. Marshall could quote baseball statistics and debate any team’s strengths and weaknesses. He was a member of St. Agnes Church in Sawyer, Michigan where he was well known and loved.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Marshall, Jr. and Ildiko VanHelsland, of Green Valley Arizona. Marshall is also survived by grandchildren Katherine Van Helsland of Pheonix, Arizona; Kirsten (Kenneth) Spliethof of Burke, Virginia, and Michael (Lisa) VanHelsland of Los Angles, California and great-grandchildren Parker and Emma Spliethof.
