Marshall E. Robinson, 90 years, formerly of South Jacksonville, IL and more recently a resident of Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy died February 19, 2008 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
He was born April 21, 1917 in Morgan County, south of Prentice, IL; the son of Harrison and Alice Maria Foster Robinson. He married Miriam Frances Lowery on September 28, 1942 at Centenary Methodist Church in Richmond, VA and she preceded in death on December 5, 1999.
He is survived by a daughter, Judith Faye Robinson of Taylorville; two sons, M. Gregory Robinson (wife, Eve) of Harshaw, WI and Harrison Robinson (wife, Mary Beth) of Chicago; a granddaughter, Grace Marie Robinson of Chicago; a step grandson, Bradley A. Whitman (wife, Angela) of Mesa, AZ; three step great grandchildren, Zachary, Ethan, and Grace Whitman; a sister, Nelle C. Thornley of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Carroll, Ralph, George and Floyd Robinson and three sisters, Elizabeth G. Flinn, A. Eleanor Sullivan, and Lucy E. Kellogg.
Mr. Robinson graduated from Jacksonville High School, attended Illinois College, and graduated from Brownâ??s Business College in Jacksonville. He served with the 30th Infantry, Third Division of the US Army from February 19, 1941 to July 25, 1945 with 30 months of service in the European Theater. He was stationed in the French Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany, and Austria.
Following his military service, he served as a service officer for the Illinois Veterans Commission in Springfield for 3 ½ years. In 1949 he began a farming career which he continued until 1992. In 1969, he became accountant for the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville. When the business offices for ISD and Illinois School for the Visually Impaired were consolidated, he became account for both institutions until his retirement on December 31, 1982.
Mr. Robinson was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Jacksonville where he served on the Finance Committee, as Chairman of the Trustees, and as Treasurer. He formerly served as Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 113, Chairman and Assistant Chairman of the South Jacksonville Parent-Teachers Burgoo fundraiser, Treasurer and President of the Jacksonville High School Band Parents Association, and as a member of the Jacksonville High School Advisory Committee.
Mr. Robinson was a member, former President and Treasurer of the Jacksonville Genealogical and Historical Society. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and a long time member of the Jacksonville Lions Club where he was named a Lions of Illinois Foundation Fellow. He was a member of Illini Lodge #4 Independent Order of Odd Fellows since March of 1952 and has served the organization in many capacities. He also enjoyed playing bridge at the Jacksonville Senior Citizen Center and woodworking projects in his home shop.
