Voltaire wrote “God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well.” Dr. Mark Andrew Melton lived a life exemplary of that principle. He passed away Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Kindred Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He was born December 29, 1946 in Kokomo, Indiana to the late Harley Austin & Betty Louise (Hoover) Melton. Before moving to Newnan two years ago to be closer to his grandchildren, Dr. Melton was an educator for 30 years in the Washington-Wilkes School system in Washington, Georgia. He received his undergraduate degree at Indiana University, and his Masters of Education and Doctorate in Education from Augusta State University. In his quest to advance the professional standards for education, Dr. Melton was the first male National Board Certified teacher. He enjoyed a life-long passion for learning. His favorite hobby in Newnan was going to the Carnegie Library. He was an avid reader and encouraged reading to his children and grandchildren. He was a beloved “Grandpa” to Madison Harley Melton whom he called his “Sweet Pea” and Conner Hayes Melton whom he called his “Sweet Tater.” He is survived by his sons, Bryan (and wife Lindsey Stitt) Melton of Newnan; Jeremy (and wife Cheney) Melton of Washington; Brandyn Melton of Atlanta. His life was made complete by his grandchildren Madison Harley Melton of Peachtree City and Conner Hayes Melton of Newnan. Also surviving is his brother, Hank Melton of Kokomo, Indiana.
