Marion Gene Lammers, son of Jacob and Jantina (Hoekman) Lammers, was born on October 15, 1932 in Platte, SD. He attended school in a rural one-room schoolhouse, and graduated from the 8th grade. He did not have the opportunity to attend high school or college; rather, he was expected to help on the farm. The family lived a simple country life, did not have electricity or indoor plumbing, and raised most of their own food. Horse and plow were used to work the field, until Marion and his brothers were older and could operate a small tractor. Marion’s mother died when she was only 47, and shortly after his father gave up farming.
In 1952, at the age of 19, Marion moved to Denver, found a job, and was drafted into the Army a few months later. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, and spent 18 months in Korea.
After his military discharge and return to Denver, Marion met his future wife, Dorothy De Groot, and they were united in marriage on September 12, 1956. Marion and “Dot” spent their entire 51 years of marriage in Denver and had four children: Dave, Dan, Diane, and Don. After a short stint with the Samsonite company, Marion began his career in the construction industry, both residential and commercial, which would span more than four decades. His work experience included masonry, concrete work, carpentry, and also positions working for a general contractor and as a superintendent. Many commercial buildings throughout the Denver area, including several government facilities, represent his handiwork and much pride. He retired in 1994.
Marion spent a lot of his retirement time doing what he called “side jobs”, which he found much less stressful. He was a true craftsman, loved working with his hands, and always had his tools ready to go. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his attention to detail, and for his determination to do things right the first time.
On October 27, 2021, Marion passed in Englewood, Colorado, he was 89 years old.
Sharing his life and memory today are: Dave (son) and Debbie Lammers, Dan (son) and Kim Lammers, Diane (daughter) and Kent Perri, Don (son) and Sheila Lammers; 9 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 2 step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ann Bok, and one brother, Jacob Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, in 2006; sister, Rita Mae, in childhood; brother, Fred, in 2010; and great-granddaughter, Adeline, in 2020.
