Marie G. Elmer passed away April 21, 2023, with family by her side.

Marie was born in Yonkers, New York, the only child of George and Loretta Foster.  Her childhood was spent in New York and Georgia, where her father volunteered to help with the war effort utilizing his engine building skills as the owner of a Buick dealership.  Marie joined the Civilian Pilot Training Program hoping to become a pilot.  The end of the conflicts thwarted those dreams.

Marie then started her post-secondary education at Pratt Institute to study fashion illustration. Her studies were interrupted when her father had a heart attack and Marie needed to manage his car dealership. She did everything from sales to keeping the books to driving new cars on and off trailers.

In 1953, Marie met a handsome widower with three young children.  A year later, she married Dr. Otto Elmer and moved to Akron.  She and Otto went on to have four more children.  The following years were filled with raising this large family while attending night classes in Education at The University of Akron.  Marie taught for many years at St. Matthew Parish School in Ellet.  She loved both her subject area, science, and her middle school students.

In retirement, Marie pursued her passions for reading, travel, arts, Cleveland’s professional sports teams and volunteering at Akron Children’s Hospital and the Akron Art Museum.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Otto; her son, George; and her grandson, Peter. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Shuff and Paula Lundell (Robert); sons, Thomas (Jody), Peter (Rita), John (Linda), Mike (Tiffany), and daughter-in-law, Cobey.  Her grandchildren include Bo Shuff (Sean), Kelsey Lang (David), Katie Elmer, Steve Elmer (Clarice,) Vanessa Murphy (Aidan), Aimee Elmer (Chris), Lauren Elmer (Max), Hannah Elmer (Hill), David Elmer, Mark Elmer (Lacey), Rick Elmer (Janelle), Lea Elmer, Calli Delgado (Chris), Nicole Elmer, Sarah and Matthew Lundell and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful, caring staff at Ohio Living Rockynol Assisted Living.
