Marie Massie Mary Anna (Marie) Brown Massie, 95, of Amherst, died Thursday, September 6, 2012 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles P. Massie. She was born June 30, 1917 in Nelson County, a daughter of the late Hugh Lloyd Brown and Annie Foster Brown of Afton. Her husband, Charles Park Massie preceded her in death in January, 1984. In addition to her parents and husband, her three brothers, Virgil Smith Brown, Leland Foster Brown, and James Thomas Brown preceded her in death. She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Marie worked for many years at the Central Virginia Training Center, where she proudly never missed a day of work. She and her late husband Charlie and her cousin Margaret Gooch (deceased in February 2002) lived in Clifford and then moved to Amherst more than 50 years ago. Marie was active in the Mary and Martha United Methodist Women’s (UMW) circle of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Amherst, where she was a faithful member. Marie was known as a great cook, especially for her pound cakes, coconut cakes, and macaroni and cheese that she graciously shared with good friends and family. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling on bus trips with her brother, Thomas. After a fall in 2010, Marie resided at the Fairmont Crossing Health and Rehabilitation nursing facility where she received excellent care until her death. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 8 from 6 – 8 pm and on Sunday, September 9 from 2-4 pm at the Driskill Funeral Chapel, 201 Grandview Drive, Amherst, VA 24521. A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lisa Barbery and the Rev. Vernie Barrow officiating. Interment will be at the Amherst Cemetery following the funeral service. The family will receive friends after the interment in the church fellowship hall, with refreshments provided by her church family. Active Pallbearers will be Marie’s nephews: Leland F. “Junior” Brown of Staunton, J. Thomas Brown, Jr. of Waynesboro, Dr. William M. Brown of Lynchburg, and Gary W. “Micky” Brown, of Mechanicsville, as well as her great nephews: Dr. Michael H. Brown of Richmond, T. Alex Brown of Richmond, and Patrick B. Brown of Lynchburg. Also, the Rev. Robert Massie, who is cousin to the late Charles Massie, will serve as a pallbearer, as well as Stephen C. Beuttel of Centreville, who is married to niece Patricia E. Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be great nephew William C. Brown of Mechanicsville and members of the Mary and Martha UMW circle of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
