Maria Teresa Contreras, 84, of Hazlet, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, New Jersey. She was born Maria Teresa Rodriguez on November 29, 1936 in Bogota, Colombia to Juan and Rosana (Romero) Rodriguez. Maria was the youngest of 14 children and was raised in Colombia, where she met her beloved husband, Eduardo. Maria and Eduardo were married on March 24, 1955 in Colombia, where they began life and family together. In 1989, they immigrated to the United States, starting their lives in Parlin, New Jersey where they lived for a short time, before settling in Hazlet. Maria was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend to many. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
She was predeceased by her parents, Juan and Rosana (Romero) Rodriguez, her beloved husband, Eduardo Contreras, and her daughter, Maria Gilpin. Maria is survived by her loving children, Elsa Rodriguez and her husband, Carlos, of South River, New Jersey, Lucy Contreras of Parlin, New Jersey, Jackelyn Cuervo and her husband, Juan, of Colombia, Oscar Contreras and his wife, Maria Eva, of Union Beach, New Jersey, William Contreras and his wife, Carmen, of Old Bridge, New Jersey, and Wilson Contreras and his wife, Romana, of East Brunswick, New Jersey, her dear son-in-law, John Gilpin, and her treasured cousin (who was like a son to Maria), Helman Molano. Maria also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Johanna, Manny, Shawn, Jordan, Rafael, Jonathan, Christian, Sebastian, Angie, Daniela, Kevin, Steven, Casey, Adriana, and Emily, and her adored great grandchildren, Brianna, Bryan, Brandon, Felipe, Natalie, Sara, Christopher, Joseph, and Nicholas.
