Margaret Marvin Barnes (Peggy), 94
Troy Margaret Marvin Barnes (Peggy), 94 ,of Troy, NY died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a brief illness.
Born in Troy, NY on Christmas Day, 1909. She was the daughter of the late Dwight Marvin, former editor of the Record Newspapers in Troy and the late Marian (Hobbie) Marvin. Mrs. Barnes was married to the late Dr. Eric W. Barnes, a distinguished Broadway actor of the 30’s, former head of the English Department at Russell Sage College and a noted author.
Mrs. Barnes was educated at Emma Willard School, The Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, Germany and Connecticut College. She completed graduate work at Radcliffe College, the Boston Museum School, Columbia University and Russell Sage College. In retirement she resided on Cape Cod, returning to Troy in 1989.
Before being married, Mrs. Barnes was employed as a self-employed portrait painter and taught art at Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield, MA. She also taught History of Art at the Loomis-Chaffee School in Windsor, CT from 1964 to 1975.
Peggy was a lady in every sense of the word. Her graciousness and elegant manner pervaded all facets of her life. She was a voracious reader, correspondent and conversationalist (in four languages) and would entertain guests with fascinating stories of her life experiences.
Mrs. Barnes was a devoted member and communicant of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Troy.
She is survived by a son, Charles T. Barnes (Cheryl) of Niskayuna, NY, five grandchildren, Deirdre B. Harris of Burlington, VT., Eric W. Barnes of Boston, MA., Erica Barnes Thomas of Bethesda, MD., Brandon T. Barnes of Charlestown, MA. and a great grandson, Cameron Harris of Burlington, VT., a brother, Keith Marvin of Worcester, MA.
