Margaret M. Shewman, 94, of Freeport, died Sunday, February 19, 2012, at Provena St. Joseph Nursing Center, with her family at her side. Born June 8, 1917, in Freeport, she was the daughter of Phillip and Katherine (Rath) Kousch.
She married Charles R. Shewman on January 3, 1947. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ for over 80 years and a member of Beta Sigma Phi since 1949. Marg worked at many places and in many occupations during her life. In her early years, she worked at the Arcade Toy Manufacturing company. From 1942-1945 she worked as an arms inspector for the U.S. government at plants in both Freeport and Rockford. Other employment included Sundstrand, Furst McNess, and finally the State Bank from which she retired in 1986 after 14 years. After retirement, she managed her husband’s stained glass art business, House of Charles, into the early ’90s. Marg loved the outdoors, especially gardening, and enjoyed spending summer weekends playing lawn darts or horseshoes in the backyard. She loved the home she and Reed built with the help of her brother-in-law some 60 years ago.
Surviving is her daughter, Paula (John) Rawleigh of Freeport; one grandson, Justin Rawleigh, and his fiancée Crystal Cross, of Chandler, AZ; nephew David Young and family of Red Oak; and nephew Geoffrey Symanek and family of Coral Springs, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sister Alberta M. Young.
