Margaret Ekstrom, 93, a resident of Hamilton Communities for 2 years, died peacefully on Friday, June 17, 2005. She was born July 11, 1911, to John and Sadie Murphy in Boise, Idaho, the eldest of seven children..Kelley, Lillian, Marian, Janet, Waneta and Neal.

Margaret attended Madison Twp High School and earned a BS degree from Purdue University, which led to 28 years of teaching high school home economics, English, and science in South Haven, Michigan, New Carlisle and New Prairie High Schools.

She was married to Carl L. Ekstrom for 56 years, before Carl died in 1994. Their only son, John, died in 1985, but Margaret is survived by two daughters, Marsha Kirsch (Greg) of Kansas City, MO, AnnNita McDonald of Gary, IN; two granddaughters, Inga and Erika Kirsch; two sisters, Janet Garvey of South Bend, Waneta Garvey of Indianapolis; and one sister-in-law, Sarah Haack of Sturgis, Michigan.

She prized her honorary scholastic memberships at Purdue University in Kappa Delta Pi, Alpha Lambda Delta, the Anonian and Philalathon Literary Societies, and her participation in the Varsity Debate Team and the Purdue Womens Track Club. An active 4-H leader for many years, she took pride in her familys accomplishments, her travels with Carl and their work together in the United Methodist Church. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, gardening, letter writing and bragging about her family.

Friends may visit with the family on Friday, July 1, at 1 p.m. in the United Methodist Church (New Carlisle) followed by the service at 2 p.m.
