Margaret Janette Steele passed into eternal life on December 5, 2020. She was born on March 18, 1933 to Geraldine and Victor Moore in Morristown, NY. She graduated from Watertown High School and became a telephone operator for Bell Telephone. While working in Watertown, Margaret met the love of her life, Frederick Steele. On October 14th, 1954, Margaret and Fred married and began a joyous life together that spanned sixty-four years. Fred’s time with the United States Air Force took them to all corners of the United States, with an extended stay in Anchorage, Alaska.
After Fred left the Air Force, the couple settled in central Pennsylvania to raise their family. Margaret continued her work with Bell Telephone where she made many of her life-long friendships. After the Bell office closed in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, Margaret worked for Susquehanna University and Middleburg Livestock Auction. In 1999, after both Fred and Margaret retired, they moved to The Hamptons in Auburndale, Florida.
Every summer, the couple would vacation along the St Lawrence River in Upstate New York. Margaret moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2020 to be closer to her son. Margaret passed away at home with hospice and family by her side.
Margaret loved life the most when she shared it with her family and friends. She enjoyed crafting, quilting, and knitting. Decorating for each holiday in grand style, she would transform her house with a multitude of decorations for each season.
She took numerous opportunities to travel with Fred across the Southern states, Caribbean, and her beloved Williamsburg.
After retirement, Margaret often volunteered her time to local schools, her Lutheran church, and the Watson Clinic, in Florida.
Margaret was deeply loved by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred and her two sisters Jackie and Shirley. She is survived by her son, Brian Steele and daughter-in-law MaryKay Powell-Steele of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Margaret was also survived by her three grandchildren, Jason and Linda Powell of Stowe, VT and Natalie Powell of Kalamazoo, MI. Margaret especially loved her surviving great grandchildren Dylan and Alden Wilson and Grant and Elena Powell. She is also survived by her dear friend and caregiver, Judy Sutton.
