Letter home from Kevin
December 21, 2004
Kevin: ” We had just finished a patrol and were heading to the mess tent for lunch. I saw my commanding officer and gave my report to him. I turned to head towards the mess tent, I was approximately 100 yards from the tent when the explosion occurred. I dropped to the ground and waited for a second explosion. Then I ran to the tent to help. I came across two of my best friends which were mortally injured. I held the first in my arms as I felt him slip away. I reached over and grabbed the other and told him to stay with me as he slowly succumbed to his injuries. My immediate thoughts were why as I felt the hurt and the pain inside grow. I looked around and saw other men being cared for and quickly realized had I been 5 minutes earlier, I may be among the fallen as well. 13 of my brothers had fallen.”
May/June 2005″While on IED patrol with my men, we encountered an explosion from an IED. Moments later as the dust cleared, I checked myself for injuries and quickly  noticed my friend next to me with a mortal injury to his head. I reached out and put my hand on him as another soldier moaned in pain. I quickly got up and assisted him until the medics arrived. After this, I collapsed and immediately thought to myself why not me. I got up and told the medic that I needed the piece of shrapnel from the deceased. He asked me why. I told him that I need it to make sense of why I didn’t get hurt. Why I didn’t die”
