On Wednesday, September 26, 2007, Maggie Dawson Carter took her flight from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and entered into God’s eternal Rest.

Maggie was born August 29, 1915 to the late Ruth and Minnie McKoy Dawson. She grew up in the Stedman area and attended high school in Cumberland County. Maggie later joined Shiloh United Church of Christ where she faithfully served until declining health prevented her from attending. She served on the usher board and sung with the Senior Choir. Every Sunday you could look for her wheel chair being rolled in to her special corner.

Maggie retired from the Cumberland County School system in 1992. She was employed at Cape Fear High School as a baker. She won the county award as the “Best Baker of the Year”. Aside from her famous rolls and cinnamon buns, she earned the name “Grandma” from the teachers and students.

Maggie’s joy was to feed her family on Sunday. She would not only feed her family but everyone who placed their feet at her table had a welcoming invite to Sunday’s dinner and any other meal.

In 1933, Maggie married the late Joel E. Carter, Jr. to this union thirteen children were born. A daughter Minnie Ola Hair and a son, Rev. Michael Carter preceded her in death.

To cherish her memories in their hearts are six daughters: Goldie Corbin of Wade, North Carolina; Estherine Moore, Eunice Byrd, Bernice Phelps (Kenneth), of Stedman, North Carolina; Pecolia Bradley and Vernell Holloway of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Five sons: Ernestine Carter (Sarah), Reginald Carter (Cassandra) and Harold Carter (Linda) of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Samuel Carter and Doene Carter of Stedman, North Carolina. Six grandchildren were raised in the home: Helen, Deborah, Doris, Darryl, Orlando and Orrin. One Daughter-in-law, Amelia Carter, two brothers, Charlie Dawson and Ruth Dawson, Jr.; two sister-in-laws, Lela and Dixie Dawson of Stedman, North Carolina and a special nephew, Joseph Hoffman of Stedman, North Carolina. In addition to this legacy, Maggie was the grandmother of 69 grandchildren, 162 great-grandchildren and 60 great, great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
