Those left to honor Mable’s memory include her husband, Robert of rural Newton; two sons, Gerry (Phyllis) McGowen of Omaha, Nebraska, and Bob (Becci) McGowen of Waukee, Iowa; daughter, Linda (Tom) Panci-McGowen of Lausanne, Switzerland; her grandson, Zachary McGowen of Omaha, Nebraska; three sisters, Doris Philips of Columbus, Ohio, Virginia Elliott of Nevada, Iowa, and Juanita (William) Taylor of Mountain Grove, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bryan and Matilda (Fleener) Smith.
Mable served her country in the U. S. Navy during WW II.
Mabel was a graduate of Maxwell High School in Maxwell, Iowa where she was the class Valedictorian. She was also a graduate of the Chillicothe School of Business in Chillicothe, Missouri
Mabel was the administrator and librarian at the Newton Public Library for 10 years, retiring in 1976.
