Lyman Shumway Stanton, passed away at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Riverbend Hospital in Springfield, Oregon on February 15, 2017. He was born on October 25, 1923 to Edgar and Antoinette Stanton in Seattle, Washington. Straight out of High School he worked at Bremerton Naval Shipyard as a machinist repairing ships damaged at Pearl Harbor.
He earned his Masters in Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington, and had a successful career as an excellent Chemical Engineer. As a young engineer at Cal Research he played a key role in the research and development of the isocracking process for refinement of petroleum products.
Lyman was known as an expert outdoorsman, leading numerous Sierra Club hikes through the wilderness, many times with his children joining him. As a Sierra Club Leader he brought inner city children on backpacking trips, for many their first experience in the wilderness. Lyman was active as a Boy Scout Leader.
He was very interested in genealogy and meticulously researched and documented the Stanton and Heard family ancestries. He and Lillie Mae took many trips around the United States conducting research together and enjoyed their travels.
Thank you to the staff and residents of Fox Hollow Residential Community and Peace Health Sacred Heart for their loving care.
