Luke McGuire, age 80 of Algona, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017 at his home in Algona. Luke Theodore McGuire, the son of Mark T. and Florence (Voit) McGuire, was born on October 12, 1936 in Whittemore, Iowa. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1954 and attended St Thomas College in St. Paul, Minnesota for one year. Luke was united in marriage on November 12, 1957, to Carol Wagner in St. Joe. The couple lived in Burt for 44 years until moving to Algona in 1999. Luke was a farmer and custom combined in the wheat fields from Oklahoma to South Dakota for eleven years. He also drove truck from 1969 – 2012 mainly hauling for Pioneer Hybrid International.
Luke retired in 2013 at the age of 76. He was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus where he achieved the Fourth Degree Knight title. He enjoyed the time he spent traveling to Germany, Las Vegas, Florida and most of the Western United States. Luke was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. He enjoyed spending time with all of his grandchildren. Luke is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carol of Algona; children, Nancy (Harlan) Steburg of Algona, Norma (Matt) Schiller of Fertile and Nicholas (Lori) McGuire of Burt; eight grandchildren and three step grandchildren, Stephanie, Brian and Allison Steburg, Danielle Allen, Jacob, Emma, Luke and Joseph Schiller, Crystal (Joshua) Begley, Cassie (Kevin) Marso and Clinton McGuire; one great grandson, John Begley; two brothers, Michael (Deb) McGuire of Atchison, KS and Richard (Rosa Lee) McGuire of Cainsville, MO; three sisters, Ann (Richard) Thompson of Ledyard, Mary Reit of West Des Moines and Florence (Carl) McGuire of Lamoni; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy McGuire of Cainsville, MO and Diane McGuire of West Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Cyle McGuire; brothers, William, Donald, Leonard, Mark, Patrick, Edward and David McGuire; a sister, Helen Bockenstedt; brothers-in-law, Fred Bockenstedt and Harold Reit; and sisters-in-law, Ruth McGuire, Verena McGuire, Cecelia McGuire and Carol A. McGuire.
