Luis H. Mendez, 91, of Bethlehem, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2013 in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Aida L. (Almodovar) Mendez, who passed away in 2002. Born in Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico, he was the son of the late Jose Antonio and Jacinta (Almodovar) Mendez. Luis served his country in the US Army during World War II, for a total of 8 years. He worked for the Bethlehem Steel in the Blast Furnace until retiring in 1984. After retirement, Luis worked for Orrs Department Store as the elevator man. He was a member of the Local United Steelworkers and Holy Infancy Catholic Church in Bethlehem. Luis enjoyed taking walks, tending to his garden and sitting on his front porch. Survivors: Daughter, Iris N. Linares and her husband Henry of Bethlehem; son, Louis A. Mendez of Northampton; brother, Israel Mendez of Bronx, NY; sister, Dolores Lugo of Bronx, NY; 4 grandchildren, Denise, Sonja, Michael and Jodi; 3 great-grandchildren, Ricky, Joel and Megan; and his dedicated caregiver of 5 years, Carmen Dilan. Luis was preceded in death by a sister Carmen Miranda and brothers Miguel and Auerilo Mendez.
