Lucy Abeyta Mayorga, born February 15, 1928, passed away in her sleep, February 10, 2020. She was surrounded by family, and is now with her husband, Emilio Mayorga, the love and strength of her life. She was 91 years old.

Lucy, a lifelong resident of Flagstaff, attended Arizona State College Training School, (grade school) and Flagstaff High School. As a teenager she worked at Babbitt’s General Store, as well as babysitting and cleaning houses.

Lucy met Emilio while in high school. It was destiny that they would marry, as they were born one day apart. Lucy loved dancing and took Emilio to every dance she could. Lucy and Emilio married April 17, 1948, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, and started their family. Eventually they would build a small welding and garage machine shop, into Mayorga’s Welding, a fixture in the story of Flagstaff. As members of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish, she and Emilio actively supported the parish throughout their lives.

For years Lucy was a girl scout leader. She was always very proud of the success all “her girls” achieved and bragged about them at every available opportunity. Lucy was very active in Mayorga’s Welding until she and Emilio retired to Cottonwood, where they spent 12 years of retirement bliss, until his death in 2004.  Lucy then returned to Flagstaff.  She eventually moved into The Peaks retirement home.

Lucy cherished her daily walk along the trail, with the trees and deer, early in the mornings.  It was her time to share with Emilio, her longing for them to be together again. Lucy was preceded in death by her husband Emilio Mayorga; her parents Jennie and Frank Abeyta; her sister Socorro Martinez (Augustine); and her daughter Yolanda Shoemaker (Rick).

She is survived by her brother Frank Abeyta (Margret); her sons; Michael Mayorga, Magnolia, Texas, and Frank Mayorga (Tamara) of Camp Verde; granddaughters; Madeline Mayorga, Flagstaff, Chandra Marsden(George), of Los Alamos, NM, and Shanti Nordstrum (Erik), of Durango, CO; Danny Martinez (Joyce) of Camp Verde, and numerous nieces and nephews.
