Lucille E. McGary

December 22, 1922 – April 27, 2023

Lucille E. McGary passed away April 27, 2023 at 100 years of age.  She was born at home in Liberty Center, Ohio to O.E and Pearl (Swartzlander) Murdock, the youngest to seven children.

After graduating from Liberty Center High School in 1940, Lucille was employed as a secretary at the Lipincott Tomato Factory in Napoleon, Ohio (Now Campbell’s Soup). While working there she met Roy D McGary and they married.

Lucille and Roy lived in Napoleon for two years and then moved to Liberty Center to live their lives. They became the parents of five children, all of whom graduated from Liberty Center High School.

Being a wife, mother and grandmother were the most important things in Lucille’s life. She was raised in a large family and family came first. Friendships came next and these were formed in church, school and neighborhoods and where always remembered. Lucille belonged to the Liberty Center United Methodist Church and the Fulton Chapter #67 O.E.S.

She worked two years for Barlow’s IGA Grocery, six years at McClures Foodland, and 14 years at the Liberty Center Elevator, forming many friendships while working.

Reading, bowling, church and meeting with her “coffee” friends at Charlie’s were activities she enjoyed until “age” changed her life.

Besides her husband and parents, Lucille was preceded in death by sons: Roscoe “Rocky”, Roy Jr. “Butch” McGary and daughter Colleen Martinez: great-granddaughter Emery Funkhouser, great-grandson Mitchell Bohmler; brothers Charles, Ray and Dale Murdock; sisters Helen McOscar, Gertrude Crawford, Olive Keeler, and sister-in-law Gertrude Murdock.

She leaves behind daughters: Claudia (James) Funkhouser of Mesa, AZ and Catherine (Loren) Gentry of Granger, IN; son-in-law Clifton Martinez of Midwest City, OK; 9 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Helen Murdock and Delores McGary.

Before having any grandchildren of their own, Lucille and Roy were chosen as Granddad and Grandma McGary by three young neighbor children. Lucille has remained grandma all these year to Bruce (Karen) Tallman, Mark Tallman and Cassandra (Brett) Griggs.

Following surgery in 2013, Clifton’s niece Ana Simms stayed with Lucille to help her. After a year she was asked to move in so Lucille could stay in her own home. Ana has been a very important member of the family since then.  We are all grateful for her.
