On Tuesday, July 22, 2014, our beloved Lucille Louise (Wright) Grier was called home. Lucille was born on August 16, 1916 to Everdean Barner and Lawrence Reed, and raised by Johnny and Daisy Gary in Emporia, VA.
In 1935, she entered into a union with Thomas Jarrett, and from that union three children were born, Christine Jarrett, Nathaniel Jarrett, and Joan Jarrett. In 1941, she migrated to Washington, DC. There she met and married Curtis Grier. From that union one daughter was born, Gloria Grier.
Lucille often called “Ma” worked at Simpson Pharmacy for 20 plus years. She also held a position with the Bethesda Naval Academy Hospital.
Ma was President of a prominent social ladies club called the Supreme Ladies for many years in Washington, DC. She was also a member of the Helping Hands Club of Antioch Baptist Church.
Ma had many loves, to name a few she loved sewing, shopping for shoes, purses, and especially hats. She loved traveling and almost never missed a shopping and/or casino trip.
Lucille had a sophisticated style and an eye for fashion. Her snazzy style and feisty attitude paved an avenue for love by many of the lives in which she touched. She was witty, fun loving and an all-around tough cookie. She was gracious and giving to anyone in need. Though faced with many life challenges she always remained positive and hopeful. She never let the small things weigh her down.
Lucille had a special girlfriend, Mary Buck, whom she loved like a sister. They were almost inseparable. They were members of the Supreme Ladies Social Club; they shopped, traveled, and prayed together. Ma never went more than a few days without speaking to Ms. Buck.
Lucille is survived by three daughters, Gloria Grier (Jasper), Christine McPhail (Abraham) and Joan Williams (John); one son, Nathaniel Jarrett; nine grandchildren, Barbara Gillison (Teron), Raeshonda Folson, Stacey Clinkscale, Lanae Franklin (Larry), Gregory McPhail (Michelle), Rachel Boyd (Gary), John Gray, Jeffery Gray and Marcia Gregory; 17 great grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren; and a host of other family members.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a stepsister, two brothers, Wallace and Steve Wright, and grandchildren, Michelle Gray, Terry Gilbert and Torre Jarrett.
