Lucille Lorraine Kaszar, age 89, of Cassopolis, Michigan, formerly of Akron, Ohio died peacefully Thursday, July 26, 2018 in the company of her family and friends, as well as in the hands of God in Cass County Medical Care Facility in Cassopolis. She was born July 20, 1929 in Marshallville, Ohio, the second oldest of four daughters born to Arthur and Minnie Long.

Living for most off her life in Akron, Ohio (with a short stint in San Bernadino, California) she worked for both Roadway and Mayflower Trucking, and for the Water Department of the City of Akron while raising Steve Kaszar, her only child, with Stephen Joseph Kaszar, from whom she was later divorced. Lucille was a devoted Christian, first attending Kenmore Church of the Nazarene and later New Covenant Presbyterian Church, in both of which she was extremely active – she was ordained an elder in the Presbyterian Church where she also served as a Stephens minister.

She enjoyed reading and book buying immensely, an addiction passed on to her son, and with her sister, Bonnie, was also fascinated by her family genealogy. She also had a long-standing love of animals. Albert Schweitzer’s “Reverence for Life” inspired her to open her home to way too many strays, and to become in later life both a vegetarian and an animal advocate.

At the same time, Lucille had a huge compassion for humans in need, supporting children through World Visition and disabled veterans through Wounded Warriors and other such organizations.Lucille loved God, people, and animals, the second two in varying order at times. She was devoted to her family, especially her son, and later, daughter in law, Martha Kaszar. She was also very fond of the staff and residencts of Cass County Medical Care Facility, her home for the last year and a half of her life, and especially of her loyal friend – and at times co-conspirator – Bonnie Loux. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Stephen and Martha Kaszar of Cassopolis; two sisters, Bonnie Dittmer of Atwater, Ohio, Connie Leonard of Georgia; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Iris Balzer; and her former husband.
