Dr. Lowell Stewart Rapping, MD, a lifelong resident of Peekskill, New York, passed away on March 26th, 2022 at the age of 93.
Dr. Rapping was born to Milton and Gertrude Rapping on July 28th, 1928. He graduated from Peekskill High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. Dr. Rapping attended the University of Melbourne in Australia, where he earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery. When he returned to the United States, he was a Captain in the Air Force in Syracuse, NY. Dr. Rapping maintained a private family practice in Peekskill for over 30 years. He served as Chief of Staff at the Peekskill Hospital for 15 years and was also the Medical Director at Graymoor for many years. Dr. Rapping spent the final years of his career serving as the Medical Director for the Westchester County Department of Corrections.
Dr. Rapping married the love of his life, Beverly Bartash Rapping, in Newark, New Jersey on June 6th, 1959. They were married for 46 years, until her death in 2005. Dr. Rapping is survived by his children: Keith Rapping and his wife Lisa, of Yorktown; Lynne Rapping of Cortlandt Manor; Cathy Cottle and her husband Owen, of Shallotte, NC; Jodie Rapping and her partner Steve Young of Providence, RI. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Shauna, Carly, Jake, Samantha, and Shane, as well as his sister-in-law Rita Wolek and her children Michael, Jamie, and Jonathan. Dr. Rapping and his family were grateful for Valerie Mighty, his treasured friend, and longtime caretaker. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his sister Marilyn Rusoff.
Dr. Rapping enjoyed gardening, fishing, painting, and reading. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as “Goppi.”
