Lowell Leigh Howard, 89, passed away on August 27, 2014 at Calvert Manor in Rising Sun, Maryland.  He was born on August 10, 1925, in Sylmar, MD, the son of Andrew and Bessie McVey Howard.

Lowell grew up in North East and graduated from North East High School in 1943.  He joined the army in 1944 and trained with the cavalry at Fort Riley Kansas.  He served in World War II with the 3rd Battalion, 475th Infantry Division as a Rifleman Private First Class.  After serving in China, Burma and India, he was honorably discharged in 1946.  After the war, he became an electrician and worked at Edgewood Arsenal until his first retirement.

On November 24, 1948, Lowell married Virginia Blake in North East and they were happily married for 66 years.  In 1965, he and Virginia opened Howard’s Market in North East.  He sold the business and retired again in 1979.  Retirement was not something Lowell enjoyed, so in 1982 he and his daughter Lynn opened a deli / restaurant in North East and named it “Lindy’s” after his favorite dog. In 1986, they moved the business to Perryville where Lowell maintained an active role until his illness in June of this year.

Lowell was recently recognized for 72 years’ membership in the North East Fire Company.  He was also a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Besides working, Lowell enjoyed riding his three-wheeled motor scooter around the back roads of western Cecil County.  He also enjoyed “antique” music, taking photographs and talking to people at Lindy’s.  When asked, “When are you going to retire?”, he always replied, “Where else would I rather be?”.

Lowell is survived by his wife, Virginia of Perryville; daughter Pamela and her husband Jacob Zahn of Port Deposit; daughter Lynn and her husband Tom Amrein of Port Deposit; daughter Leigh and husband Patrick Fleming of Martinsburg, WV; grandson Thomas Howard Fleming of Morgantown, WV; granddaughter Liza Blake Fleming of Philadelphia, PA; step-grandson Joshua Zahn and family of Elkton; step-grandson Josiah Zahn and family of Fawn Grove, PA; step-grandson Jeromy Amrein and family of Bel Air, MD; step-grandson Justin Amrein and family of Jarrettsville, MD; step-granddaughter Danna Amrein and family of Abingdon, MD; and several nieces and nephews.
