Louise Marilyn Hulst was born November 25, 1930, to Thurlow J. and Nina Hardenberg Jacoby in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Louise graduated from Kelloggsville Public School in 1948 where she was valedictorian. She went on to earn her BA degree in 1951 at Calvin College (now University) in Grand Rapids, and her MA at the University of South Dakota.

Louise met John Hulst while they were students at Calvin; they were married on December 21, 1951, in Grand Rapids. Early in their marriage, both John and Louise had polio. Louise recovered completely, while John had a weakened leg and later developed post-polio syndrome. They also lost two baby boys before being blessed with three girls.
