Louis O. Mitten 7-18-1915 – 8-4-2012 “Soon you will read in the newspaper that I have died. Don’t believe a word of it. I am more fully alive than I have ever been.” Dwight Moody On August 4, 2012, Rev. Louis O. Mitten heard his Lord, Jesus Christ, say to him, “Today, you will be with me in Paradise.” And so he is!
Louis was born July 18, 1915 in East St. Louis, Illinois, to Grenville and Vera Mitten. After graduation from high school, in 1932, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp, and was stationed in Marsailles, Illinois. There he met the love of his life, Gladys Gabehart. They married September 19, 1937, and celebrated 70 years of marriage before Gladys’ death in 2008. They had three children; son, Donald and daughters, Janet and Carol. Louis attended Anderson College from 1953-1958, and began pastoral ministry to Church of God congregations in Toppenish, Washington, Minot, North Dakota, Springfield, Colorado and Rapid City, South Dakota. He retired and moved to Anderson, Indiana in 1980. He enjoyed gardening and rock collecting. He also was a substitute teacher for Anderson Community Schools for five years. He volunteered with the Literacy Coalition, Contact Help, and taught Adult Education Classes at Park Place Church of God. He was a faithful member of South Meridian Church of God, serving in various ministries in the church. Louie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys; brother, Robert; sisters, Bess Hartman and Marie Hammond; two great-grandchildren, Timothy Louis Mitten and Ian Vincent Mitten.
Surviving are a sister, Vera Ditty of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; son, Donald Sharon Mitten of Colorado Springs, Colorado; daughters, Janet Beatty of Anderson, Indiana and Carol Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Cheryl Mitten, David Denise Beatty, Michael Dawn Anderson, Todd Mitten, Melanie Brian Bristol, Mark Mary Mitten and Seth Kathy Mitten. Also surviving are twelve great grandchildren, Justin and Colleen Mitten, Holly Ewald, Jessica Beatty, Christy, Coleman, and Caleb Anderson, Josiah, Hannah, and Sarah Bristol, and Samuel and Joshua Mitten; and several nieces and nephews.
