Louis Maharas, age 84 of Algona, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society in Algona. Louis Melvin Maharas, son of Nicholas and Thelma (Tucker) Maharas was born March 8, 1933 in Algona, Iowa. He attended Algona Schools and graduated from Algona High School in 1952. On October 23, 1953, Louie enlisted in the United States Army serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on September 30, 1955. On June 1, 1958 he married Donna J. Seefeld at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona, Iowa.

Louie worked at Coast to Coast then started Maharas Manufacturing remanufacturing International Harvester tractor parts until his retirement in 1999. Louie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as an elder, Golden K Kiwanis, Black Hats and Lutheran Laymen League where he held several offices. Louie was an advocate for the Algona Good Samaritan Care Center. He enjoyed the Over 50 Golf Club, Black Hat events and being able to take part in the Honor Flight in 2013. Louie loved to spend time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s events.

Louie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donna Maharas of Algona; two daughters, Connie (Michael) Potter of Waterloo and Kelly (Tom) Borchers of Carroll and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Christian Borchers; three brothers, Virgil, William and Nicholas Jr. Marahas and two sisters, Dorothy Woodall and Viola Schipull.
