Louis J. “Poppi” Verdura, 84, of Newington, passed away on Friday June 20, 2014 at the Hospital of Central CT, with his family by his side. Born on July 28, 1929, in Messina, NY, Louis was the son of the late Carl and Angela (Marquette) Verdura and the husband of 48 years to Laureen (Connors) Mackin. Prior to his retirement, Louis worked in the Restaurant Industry as a bartender and in management. In his leisure time, Louis was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and the UCONN Women’s basketball team. He enjoyed travelling, taking yearly trips to Myrtle Beach, SC and spending time with his summer family at Holly Tree Campground in RI. An excellent cook, Louis created most of the family meals which they enjoyed immensely. Louis will be greatly missed by all who had the opportunity to know and love him. Besides his wife Laureen, Louis is survived by his daughters, Judith A. Regina and her husband, John of Vernon; Sheila M. Gleifert of Plainville, his brother, Virgil Verdura and his wife, Claire of Frankfurt, NY; his grandchildren, Michael, David and Kathryn VanSteenburgh and Nicholas Gleifert as well as his twin great granddaughters, Mackenzie and Kaylee VanSteenburgh. In addition to his parents, Louis was predeceased by his brother, Carl Verdura, his son-in-law, Kenneth Gleifert, Jr. and granddaughter, Sarah Marie VanSteenburgh.
