The funeral for Lorene Martin Young, 84, of Avon Park, Florida, formerly of Martinsville, Virginia, who died June 8, 2010 at The Oaks of Avon Park Nursing Home, Avon Park, Florida, will be at noon, Monday, June 14, 2010 at Roselawn Cemetery, Martinsville, Virginia. The graveside service will be private with The Reverend David Schill officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., just prior to the graveside service, at Norris Funeral Home, Martinsville, Virginia. Mrs. Young was born in Martinsville, Virginia on May 8, 1926 to Mary Catherine Martin and Christopher Columbus Martin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Martin, and sisters, Esther Wilson and Bessie Bray. Mrs. Young attended Brosville Elementary School and Axton High School. She was a homemaker, school bus driver, bookkeeper, wonderful Mother and loving Wife. For a number of years, she was an active member of Granberry Methodist Church. In later years, she became a member of First United Methodist Church in Avon Park, Florida. Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Robert N. Young, Sr., and sons, Robert N. Young, Jr. (Suzanne) and Randall Norman Young. Also, surviving are a grandson, Christopher Jason Burton Young (Angie), her sister, Ida Donavant (O’Neal) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers will be Robert N. Young, Jr., Randall Young, Jason Young, Wilton Donavant, Charles Beard and Charles Hodges. Honorary pallbearers include her friends and neighbors of The Knoll community in Avon Park and the nurses and staff of the Oaks of Avon Park Nursing home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Alabama Animal Rescue, P. O. Box 1818, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35403. This animal welfare organization was begun in 1991 by Bob and Suzanne Young for the benefit of abused and homeless animals in the state of Alabama. Since 1991, the organization has grown to include most southeastern states.
