Lorene McLaurin was born Lorene Marcetta Brown in Tuskegee Alabama on May 16, 1926 to Peter and Mary Lou Brown.
Studious and athletic, she matriculated with Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from what was then known as Tuskegee Institute. She went on to obtain a Master’s Degree in Education from New York University.
She married Sidney L. McLaurin on May 23, 1954, and for 28 years she led the nomadic life as the wife of an Air Force officer. They lived in Alaska, Washington State, North Dakota, Florida, Japan, Virginia, the Philippines and Hawaii before finally retiring in Shalimar, Florida in 1982.
Lorene was active in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, having been a charter member of Lamda Chi Omega, the Hawaii chapter, the first chapter of the Pacific, founded in 1978.
She enjoyed sewing, cooking and skyping with her granddaughter Zlata, who lives in Russia. She also loved playing cards, especially Uno with granddaughter Miriam on Friday nights.
She was predeceased by Sid, her husband of 57 years in 2010.
She is survived by sons, Edward (Maile), Sidney (Nadia) and daughter, Barbara Monet; three step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, one granddaughter and the recent arrival of a new granddaughter.
