Lon Cooksey, 92, of Moberly, died peacefully Tuesday June 14 , 2022. He was born November 12, 1929, in Childress, Texas to the late N.J. and Ruth (Alexander) Cooksey.
The family moved to the Moberly area in the late 1930’s. Lon was a graduate of Moberly High School and the University of Missouri. Prior to receiving his Honorable Discharge, he served with the U.S. Army in Japan from 1952 to 1954. Upon his return from Japan, Lon was married in San Antonio Texas to Jo Ann Wolfe on June 12, 1954, and they moved back to Moberly to establish their home.
Lon’s career began as the General Manager of Moberly Concrete Products and later he was the Co-Owner and Manager of the Ramada Inn from its beginning in 1968 until its sale in 1983. In Retirement he worked part time for the Missouri Secretary of States Office in the Archives Division and became the area “Clock Repair go to person” for businesses and individuals.
He joined the Coates Street Presbyterian Church in 1944 and had served as Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, 9 years as a Deacon, 21 Cumulative years on its Session and Co-Chaired many Committees. Lon was past President of the Moberly Jaycees, Moberly Rotary Club and Randolph County Pachyderm Cub. During his many years as a volunteer, he received the Moberly Chamber of Commerce Volunteer Award in 2005, Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame in 2009, Meritorious Pachyderm Service Award in 2008 and Project Jump Start Contributor Award in 2009.
Lon is survived by his wife of 68 years Jo Ann, two sons, Jim (Sherry) Cooksey of Moberly and Bob Cooksey (Cindy Kisner) Slidell Louisiana, and two grandchildren, Garreth Cooksey of Hannibal and Shaylyn (Eric) McCollough of Columbia.
