M. Lois Nivens (nee Dotson), age 76, of Indian Trail passed away peacefully at home after an extended illness, on Tuesday, March 15th, 2016.
Lois was born on March 13th, 1940 in Boone, North Carolina to Bina Dotson. She was the youngest of eight children. In order, her siblings were Robert, Walt, Gladyce, Eunice, Billy, Lillie, and Donna.
At age 14, Lois moved with her family from Boone to live with her older brother Walt in Charlotte. At age 17, she met her soon-to-be husband, David Lloyd Nivens on a blind date. David was serving in the US Marines at the time. Engaged, she flew to Hawaii, where David was stationed. They were married on June 23rd, 1958 in the chapel on Kaneohe Bay Marine Base. Lois greatly enjoyed her time living in Hawaii, going to the beach regularly in the mornings and sightseeing with neighbors.
In 1959, David and Lois moved back to the mainland, eventually returning to Charlotte. With their firstborn child, Melody, they bought their first home in Charlotte and expanded their family, with son, Mark and daughter, Angelia. Lois and family lived on Crater Street for many years where she enjoyed getting together with good neighbors for coffee. As the children grew to be teens, the family moved to Timmons Court. Finally in retirement, David and Lois moved to Indian Trail where Melody later joined them. Lois and David encountered more wonderful, supportive friends in Indian Trail where they fellowshipped with many friends at Sardis Baptist Church.
Through the years Lois used her incredible social skills and warm, friendly personality in customer and guest service jobs. She began working at Belk’s, The Discount House, Family Dollar, World Bazaar, Ivey’s, First Union Bank, Presbyterian Hospital and finally Orthopedic Hospital. Lois loved working and being helpful to others. She loved dressing up and going to work where she could talk with others and meet fascinating people. She met many of her very good, longtime friends through work. Even to the end she enjoyed the company of her many friends, neighbors and church family.
Lois liked travelling to Myrtle Beach, Seattle, Boone, and other places where she could see new sights, walk and have new experiences. Breakfast was her favorite meal of the day and she often met friends and family for coffee and a good brown biscuit.
Lois is predeceased by her mother, three brothers and one sister. Her surviving family members are her spouse, David; son, Mark (wife Susan); daughters, Melody and Angelia (husband Peter); sisters Gladyce, Lillie and Eunice; grandchildren, Courtney (husband Jeremy), Ian, Max; great-grandsons, Wes and Wil; and 23 loving nieces and nephews.
