Lois June Reed Borden, of South Bend, Indiana, one day short of her 81st birthday, died Wednesday, March 7 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center following a courageous, quietly fought, battle with ovarian cancer.

Lois was born on March 8, 1926, in Indianapolis as the daughter of Kathrina and Arthur Reed.

She is predeceased by her parents and her sister, Ruth Johnson.

She is survived by her husband, James C. Borden, her daughter, Gail Borden (Jeffrey Cason) of Middlebury, Vermont; son, James A. Borden (Nicole) of Osceola, Indiana; sister, Eleanor Kassebaum of Indianapolis; and grandchildren, Elias, Chelsey, Sophia, Jessica, Gabriel; and a limitless network of family and friends.

She graduated from Shortridge High School, Indianapolis in 1944 and from Indiana University in 1948. Her first teaching job was in Richmond, Indiana. She returned to IU to get her M.Ed. after which she headed to Elkhart to continue her teaching career. She was a born teacher as the oldest of three sisters. Her mother and several aunts were career teachers.

She met her husband on a blind date in 1957 and they married on June 27, 1959.

After leaving the teaching profession in 1962 she continued to help many youngsters as a math and reading tutor. She was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of South Bend active in the United Methodist Women, and as a Sunday school teacher. She held multiple leadership positions, including President of the Budget Corner and was a Stephen Minister. Even while under treatment for cancer she continued to schedule volunteers for church and Budget Corner activities.

She was an active member of Presbyterian Players, the South Bend Civic Theater and the P.E.O.
