Lois J. Stevens, 84, of Freeport died Friday, January 04, 2013 at Provena St. Joseph Home in Freeport.
She was born July 22, 1928 in Milwaukee, WI to Frank and Dorothy (Zerbel) Wittberger. Lois grew up in West Allis and graduated there in 1946 from Central High School. Majoring in English and Latin, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Monmouth College in 1950 and began her teaching career in Shannon. Lois married Richard G. Stevens of Shannon on June 9, 1951. They divorced in 1977. Over the course of her 31 year career, Lois taught at four schools: Shannon High School, Baileyville Grade School, Douglas and Carl Sandburg Schools, both in Freeport. She loved being a teacher and thoroughly enjoyed her students and colleagues, especially her Carl Sandburg friends. After retirement in 1990, Lois volunteered as an after-school tutor. She served on the Freeport School Board from 1991-1998.
Family and friends appreciated Lois’s dedication to education as well as her keen wit, generosity and great sense of humor. Lois enjoyed playing the piano, reading, playing cards, and spending time with her children, grandsons and dogs. Survivors include daughters Diane Stevens of Bedford, TX, Mary (Keith) Blackmore of Forreston, son Frank (partner Marina Ovrutsky) Stevens of Ringwood, New Jersey; grandsons Mitchell and Christopher Stevens of Ringwood, sister and brother-in-law Ruth and John Checkis of Portland, Oregon, former husband Richard Stevens of Sun City, AZ,; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a niece Ann Checkis Robinson.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be held 4pm -7pm Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Walker Mortuary, 321 W. Main St. Freeport. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name for the Freeport Community Public School Fund. Lois’s family wishes to thank the Staff of FHN Hospice and Provena St. Joseph Center for their kindness and compassionate care for Lois.

Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be a visitation on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 4 pm- 7 pm at Walker Mortuary. A private family service will be held at a later date.
