Lois Bernice Ludowic Turner, 81

Troy Lois Bernice Ludowic Turner, 81, formerly of South Lake Avenue, died Thursday at Samaritan Hospital Troy.

Born in Brunswick, she was daughter of the late Douglas R. and Edna Lawless Ludowic. She was a life long resident of Brunswick and received hr education at Troy Public School 18, Troy High School, Syracuse University and took special public relations courses at Columbia University.

She began her newspaper career with The Troy Observer as a general assignment reporter, then as radio columnist and military editor of a by-lined personal column for area servicemen called “Column Write” which led to a special armed forces edition of the paper, which she edited. For her columns, she met and interviewed many prominent persons including Glenn Miller, Perry Como, Billy Graham and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, among others.

Lois continued her public relations career at Behr-Manning Corp. in Watervliet, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the company newspaper for its employees and was in charge of special events and press relations.

Always an advocate for volunteerism, she assisted the agencies of the United Way in their publicity programs and eventually became the United Way’s Public Relations Director and Associate Director. She completed her service there as its first woman Executive Director and 27 years on its staff. She staffed various campaign divisions and started the first cooperative effort with area-wide United Ways for radio and television coverage, represented United Way on various community boards, councils and committees.

Mrs. Turner was active in the life of the former Ninth Presbyterian Church as choir soloist, Sunday school teacher, and counselor for the youth group. She also was soloist for First United Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church, and guest soloist in many area churches.

She supervised publicity for the International Society of Christian Endeavor Interdenominational Youth Organization, at conventions in Denver, Rochester, and Grand Rapids.

Trustee Emeritus of The Eddy, she served as a charter member of its board of directors and as a board member of Eddy Cohoes Rehabilitation Center and Eddy Ford Nursing Home. She was a committee member of the Public Relations, Ebbie Pattison, Human Resources, and Nominating committees during her 17 years of service to The Eddy.

Among her volunteer responsibilities were board and committee memberships for Rensselaer County Chapter of the American Red Cross, The Junior Museum, Troy-Cohoes YWCA, Troy YMCA, Commission on Economic Opportunity Senior Aide Council, Junior League of Troy Community Service Committee, Rensselaer County Aging Council, and the Communications Consortium of Area United Ways.

Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Casey Turner of Oak Park, IL . She was predeceased by a brother Grant Morgan Ludowic.
