Lois A. Votaw, 79, of Salem passed away Tuesday morning, January 7, 2014 at the Cleveland Clinic following a brief illness. She was born April 22, 1934 in Ashland the daughter of the late Harold D. and Martha (Spreng) Smith. Lois spent most of her life as a Salem resident. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Kent State University and taught elementary students for 25 years with Salem City Schools. Lois was a member of the Salem High School Alumni Association, the Salem First United Methodist Church and a volunteer at the Salem Community Hospital. Lois was a loving person who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was an avid fan of her grandchildren’s sports teams, attending many of their games both locally and even out of state. She was an RV enthusiast and enjoyed camping and traveling. Survivors include her husband of 60 years Edward T. Votaw whom she married June 25, 1953; 3 sons, Steven (Vicki) Votaw of Plain City, Darcy (Michelle) Votaw of Lisbon and Dirk Votaw of Charleston, South Carolina; 2 daughters, Shawn (TJ) Moore of Atlanta, Georgia and Tara (Mike) Brown of Salem; a sister, Miriam Ramsey of Minerva; 12 grandchildren, Philip (Christa), Brianna (Josh), Zachary, Kalli, Abbey, and Courtney Votaw and Mackenzie, Megan, Madison, and Karlie Moore and Mike and Kristen Brown; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents a brother, Kenny Smith, preceded her in death.
