Lester E. Nelson, age 88 of Fairmount, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at Rolling Meadows Health Care Center in Lafontaine, Ind. He was born on June 18, 1927, in Marion to the late Noah and late Mary Belle (Lyons) Nelson.

He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, earning a Silver Star. On February 19, 1960, Lester married Patricia Monts in Sweetser, she preceded him in death on January 12, 1996.

He was a fork truck operator at Bell Fiber, retiring after forty-three and a half years of service. For many years, Lester also worked for Manwell Farms. In his free time, he enjoyed throwing horseshoe, fishing, working in his yard and garden, and repairing lawn mowers.

Lester is survived by his children, Sally (Marco) Clupper, of Gas City, Bethann (Tim) McDaniels, of Upland, and Michael Nelson, of Fairmount; sisters, Patsy (John) Floyd, of Kokomo, Betty Cruz, of Fairmount, Ruby Shaffer, of Marion, Dorothy Velasquez, of Huntington, and Laverna (Charlie) Smith, of Montpelier; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many brother and sister-in-laws. In addition to his parents and wife, Lester was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Laverne Nelson; sisters, Carolyn Nelson, Margaret Eisenhower, Helen Timmons, Rocky and Mary; half brother, Francis Nelson; and half-sister, Juanita Spencer.
