LEONOR M. SERNA, 68, a lifelong resident of Lordsburg passed away Saturday October 8, 2011 at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City.

Leonor was born April 11, 1943 at Steins to Miguel and Otilia Morales Serna. She was a 1962 graduate of Lordsburg High School and in 1965 she entered the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Fe becoming the first certified female officer in Hidalgo County. Leonor worked mainly as a dispatcher and during her career she had worked for all branches of law enforcement in Hidalgo County. She received numerous awards and commendations during that career and on the day of her retirement, June 10, 2001, the day was officially named “Leonor Serna Day”.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Serna-Misquez and her husband Reynaldo of Lordsburg; 2 grandchildren, Jozette Danielle Serna-Jarrott and Miguel Antonio Misquez; numerous nieces and nephews and godchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and by 4 sisters, Manuela Martinez, Juana Serna, Cecilia Serna Acosta, and Dolores Serna Montez.
