Cohoes – Leona Ruth Wagner Murray, 98, of The Boght, died Monday, February 19, 2018, at NCH Baker Hospital Downtown Naples, FL 34102 Naples after a brief illness, her daughter Deborah by her side.

Born on Alfalfa Hills Farm in The Boght, she was daughter of the late Walter A. Wagner and Helena A. Shufelt Wagner and wife for 53 years of the late Albert L. Murray. She had resided since 1947 at Boght Road in Cohoes and since 1956 summered on Babcock Lake in Grafton. She was a graduate of Cohoes High School, class of 1938 and graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse from Cohoes School of Nursing in 1939.

Leona was a nurse at Cohoes Hospital from 1939-44, a typist for New York State from 44-47, and founded and co-owned with her husband, Murray Lumber from 1950-85.

Leona loved life and cherished every moment of her 98 years. She met the love of her life, Albert, as a child, when he used to tie her ice skates, at the local pond in The Boght. They had a long and loving marriage together, founded Murray Lumber Company in The Boght, and traveled extensively upon retirement.

Leona has a long and rich heritage, and can trace her ancestors back to 1650, when they came to this country from Germany to escape religious persecution, and settled on the banks of the Hudson River. Throughout the years, her ancestors have fought in the American Revolution, and The Civil War. As founding fathers, they contributed much to the way of life as we know it in New York.

She was a member of First Church in Albany (Reformed), The Shaker Heritage Society, The Pryne House, and The Colonie Elks.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Murray Cairns, Marco Island, FL and Dr. Candis J. Murray, Cohoes; two sisters, Marion Wagner Cranston, Orlando, FL and Florence Wagner Sutler, Colfax, NC and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Janet Wagner Rieck.
