Lela Jewel Benton, 79, of Jacksonville, died Thursday, August 2, 2007, at Jacksonville Convalescent Center.

She was born Dec. 18, 1927 in McGee, Mo., the daughter of Leonard and Clary Prince Duniphan. She married Earl L. â??Budâ? Benton in 1952 in Arkansas and he preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 1976.

She is survived by one daughter, Glenda â??Gailâ? Nelson of Troy, Mo. and one son, Earl â??Daleâ? (wife, Debbie) Benton of Jacksonville; one grandson, Kevin Nelson of Troy, Mo,;one step-granddaughter, Dina Walters of Jacksonville; one great-grandson; two step-great-grandchildren; five brothers, Lowell (wife, Barbara) Duniphan of Brighton, Elza (wife, Delores) Duniphan of Godfrey, Leverne (wife, Audrey) Duniphan of New Florence, Mo., Liche (wife, Jackie) Duniphan of Benton and Grover (wife, Louise) Duniphan of McGee, Mo.; two sisters, Claudine Lancaster of Doniphan, Mo. and Brenda Caudill of Sullivan, Mo. She was preceded in death by one sister, Leda A. Caldwell (surviving husband Roy of Arkansas); five brothers, Sherman Duniphan, Clifford Duniphan (surviving wife Maxine of Granite City), Woodrow Duniphan (surviving wife Melinda of Granite City), Herschel Duniphan and Troy Duniphan.

Mrs. Benton worked at the Triangle Club in Woodson, then working at Mobil Chemical for twenty-one years, retiring in 1992. She loved fishing, jigsaw puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren.
