Lea E.S. Jaffee, 62, of Bloomington, died at Bloomington Hospital from complications from a brain tumor.

Lea was born on February 6, 1947 in Wilmington, Delaware to Isadore and Sylvia (Spring) Silverman who preceded her in death. Lea received a B.A. from Goucher College, Baltimore, MD; M.A.T. from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. From 1975 until 2002 she was an Administrative Law Judge for the State of Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. From 1993 until 2001 she served as a member of the Monroe County Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees and served two years as the board’s president. She received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Governor Frank O’Bannon at the time of her retirement in 2002. She was the 2001 Citizen of the Year from the National Association of Social Workers for the entire state of Indiana, in recognition of work to change Indiana’s definition of disability under the Medicaid program. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels beginning in 2005. She was a member of the Bloomington Jewish Center (Beth Shalom) and served as a board member and president of the board, and was chair of the “Gathering” group for seniors. She was a member of the Bloomington Hospital Board of Directors since 2005 and a member of The League of Women’s Voters since 1971. Lea was a loving wife, mother and grammy, to her husband Bruce L. Jaffee of Bloomington, daughter and son-in-law Karen and Jeremiah Kalan of Los Angeles, CA and granddaughter Marissa Kalan of Los Angeles, CA.

She is also survived by three sisters, Barbara Keil and Vivian Limmina, both of Wilmington, DE and Sheila Freeman of Miami, FL.
