Lawrence Everett Miller Sr.; 93, of Chattanooga; passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2009 in a local health care facility. He was born in Denver, Colorado in 1916 and lived his early life in San Francisco and entered the U.S. Army in 1939. He served with distinction in combat operations in the European Theater as Captain of an infantry company, winning the Bronze Star Medal for heroism in action in March 1945. After WWII, he attended and graduated from the University of Chattanooga. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and was promoted to the rank of Major. He entered the teaching profession and taught mathematics at East Ridge High School until his retirement. He was highly thought of by his students who dedicated one of the school annuals to him during his tenure. His greatest satisfaction was seeing his students consistently excel in the Tennessee State Math Contests each year. He enjoyed his hobby of writing jokes and short stories that were often published in various periodicals.
